Bling-Bling Watches
bling·bling
noun
"Bling-Bling" is a 1999 hit, hip-hop song by The B.G., featuring his Cash Money Records label mates Juvenile, Lil' Wayne, Turk,
Baby, and Mannie Fresh. The song, and its many follow-ups from the label,
popularized a hip hop slang term which refers to expensive jewelry and other
accoutrements. The term is thought to be derived from the onomatopoeia of a
visual effect used to denote light glistening off metal or jewels.
Ah... the Bling. There are many that dispute this
term's credibility, to be included into today's dictionaries and educational
glossaries. The word, by all rights, is indeed slang. However,
one would be naive to not acknowledge it's role in modern culture. Along
with "hip-hop", "phat" and "iced-out", these terms are recognizing a culture and
generation of American youth; a culture which, like it or not, has spread
world-wide and into all classes and races.
Let's face it. Where do the world's youth look, for
role models and the latest trend and fashion-setters? Television, movies
and music! What they see in theaters and on the television, is what's hot.
Musicians, actors and actresses have a tremendous influence on youth,
determining what they "must" have (or the copies and knock-offs thereof)
More importantly though, through this influence, is supply and demand. It
only takes one popular video to launch, an otherwise unheard of, piece of
clothing or jewelry into a billion dollar seller.
One
of the more poplar definitions of bling bling, mentions "the sound light makes
when reflecting off of chrome, diamonds or any other kind of jewelry".
This, of course, is ridiculous. Light makes no sound and this description
should therefore be recognized as an onomatopoeia. Another
"unusual" description mentions bling bling as "something that shines so bright
that, even with the lights are turned out, it will glow in the dark". I
think you get the meaning.
Jewelry with "bling" is expensive-looking (or actually is), very shiny or
sparkly, and often enough, quite large. The size and amount of one's
bling, is meant to depict their financial status, religious beliefs or favorite
recreational activities. There are a lot of well-crafted, brand-name
products that have been dubbed with the term "Bling-bling". If it catches
people's attention and shines brilliantly... you've got bling!
