Diver's Watch
div·er
noun
a person that works or enjoys spending time under water, especially one
equipped with breathing apparatus and weighted clothing.
Diver's Watches are designed and manufactured especially for those whose lives
depend on the reliability of their timepiece in the water. Diver's watches must
meet ISO (International Standardization Organization) standards regarding water
resistance, pressure resistance, legibility in water, time presetting function
(unidirectional, rotating elapsed time bezel), anti-magnetic ability,
anti-shock, rust resistance in salt water, manageability in the water and the ability to
withstand sudden temperature changes.
The minimum
diver's watch water resistance should
be 200M. Most watches are rated
to 50 meters (which is more than most of us will ever need). Sport and
diving watches are often rated to 200 meters or more. Ironically, humans
can only (safely) dive to about half that depth. Higher depth ratings are
more of an indicator of craftsmanship and status rather than utility.
Water resistance is also measured in ATM, or atmospheres. One atmosphere
is equivalent to 10 meters.
Unidirectional bezels are a
must for a diver, in case the bezel is accidentally
rotated backwards; so it will not show an extended diving duration. For
accurate settings, bezels should also have a one minute interval click
(unidirectional ratcheting bezel). Inscribed on the case back is the battery
replacement month (to keep the wearer aware of the last battery change) to help
prevent the watch from stopping during a dive.
The
diver's watch strap should feature extra large buckles, for easy fastening, they
should be rubber (not leather) or a metal bracelet and consist of a longer
length, to allow it to be worn over a diving suit and possibly a wetsuit
extension. The bezel should be set higher than the surface of the crystal
to prevent impacts and scratches. Large luminous hands, markers and dials
are designed for easy legibility. Please
refer to (and adhere to) your Instruction Booklet for "Periodical Check,
"Pre-Diving Check," and "Battery Change Instructions".
