Hi-Tech Watches
hi-tech also high-tech
informal adjective
Of, relating to,
or resembling advanced or complicated technology.
In 1942, an unfortunate event occurred... World War II. The
raw material and personnel adaptations necessary to accommodate the war were
tremendous. Women working in factories and playing sports, the
conservation and recycling of metal, paper and rubber and the need to find more
efficient, cost-effective ways of doing things were at the nation's forefront.
The federal government pled with Americans to cut back on grocery
and consumer goods. Americans needed ration cards, to purchase gasoline,
coffee, sugar, and meat. Rationing eventually frustrated many Americans.
For the first time in years, there was money to spend, but few goods available
to purchase. This frustration snowballed, until the end of the war.
When the war finally ended, in 1945, industries returned to consumer production
and Americans went on a buying spree of unprecedented proportions.
Among these consumer goods were timepieces. The returning
G.I.'s were quite happy with their government-issued wrist watches. In
World War I, many commissioned officers carried pocket watches, which had to
removed from the pocket and opened to check the time. This, of course,
required a lot of fumbling around in battlefield situations. At the time,
pocket watches were not normally affordable to the non-commission officer, who
was usually called to the front to replace his fallen C.O. The N.C.O.'s
wore wrist watches which were standard issue. Additionally, with the need
for precision attacks, timepieces needed to be synchronized. It didn't
take long for the enlisted man to realize that World War I and World War II
government-issued wrist watches could be easily seen at-a-glance.
Throughout the remainder of the 40's, and all through the 1950's
and 60's, the wrist watch phenomena boomed. These timepieces were primarily simple; a strap or bracelet, connected to a housing, which contained a
movement made up of; an hour hand, second hand and minute hand.
Starting just before the first World War, the word "complication"
(a timepiece
with other functions besides time keeping) began to
circulate among horologists, particularly, the chronograph. The
chronograph led to more advanced complications such as: the minute repeater,
tourbillon, dual time zone, multiple time zone, automatic, dive and radio
controlled atomic watches. The list goes on and on.
The 1970's brought about the LED wrist watch, the 80's introduced
the automatics and the 90's saw the market flooded with wrist watches that
shared an analog and digital display (still very popular today). With the
new millennia, the multiple complications and the ability to cram vast amounts
of digital data into a wrist watch is, in deed, truly amazing.
Televisions, PDA's, cameras, fish finders, data storage devices,
2-way communicators, heart rate monitors, wrist top PC's, and FM radios
are just a few of the amazing technological advancements incorporated into a
wrist watch today. Whether your timepiece need is for a recreational
sport, a secret mission, a trip to the woods or a display of status... it is out
there. You need only to look.
