Italian Watches
Although
this page is entitled
Italian Watches, it should be noted that; many of the movements, encased in
these timepieces, are Swiss-made. However, it is common among world-wide watch
designers and manufacturers, to import these reliable, Swiss-made movements, to
compliment their designs.
Today, Italy is ranked fourth in the world market, for the exportation
of Swiss timepieces and Swiss movements and the number one largest exporter in
the European market. Just think of how many times you’ve seen a timepiece, with
the small print (located just above the
6 o’clock position), which read “Swiss Movement”.
Most of the global, Italian watch companies had their roots in
fashion design, jewelry and racing, before delving into the timepiece industry.
For example: Fashion Design – Gucci, Jewelry – Ralph Lauren,
Racing – Momo and
Pirelli. These are just a few of the large, world-
renowned,
manufacturers that expanded their empire to include timepieces.

In Italy, more so than other countries, retail timepiece shops
are
generally owned and operated by families or individual companies. Each company
or shop can vary greatly from one another. While one company might focus on
high-priced, fashion over functionality, another will focus on reduced-price,
functional wrist watches. Each of these small companies serves a target market,
unlike the larger timepiece empires, that have a different target market for
each of their “lines”.
