Racing Watches
rac·ing
verb
-
To compete in a contest of speed.
-
To move rapidly or at top speed: We raced home. My heart was racing with
fear.
-
To run too rapidly, due to decreased resistance or unnecessary provision of
fuel: adjusted the idle to keep the engine from racing.
There are
many timepiece
companies that have designed wrist watches for, have ties to, or are
official partners with motor sports of some kind. On the other hand, there
are many more that don’t fall into any of these categories. However, these
non-affiliated companies design very reputable watches, with impressive
complications and a proven track record, utilized in the racing industry.
Chase-Durer
The Swiss-made Chase-Durer is
one such company. Formed a decade ago by Hollywood film producers Brandon
and Marianne Chase, in conjunction with Swiss partner Stefan Durer, Chase-Durer
realized the need for economically-priced Swiss Wrist Watches of an elevated
caliber. These wristwatches were specifically designed to the needs of
professional pilots, both civilian and military.
Today, proven reliability in
the Chase-Durer name is relevant. Their timepieces are the watch of choice
worn by the United States Special Forces, United States Air Force, the
Thunderbirds (United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron) and the
Blue Angels (United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron).
Chase-Durer’s Trackmaster Pro
Racing Chronograph series is a must-see for the serious racing
professional. Standard features include: Swiss ETA 251.262 quartz
chronograph movement with the date window at 4 o'clock, carbon fiber dial,
44mm case, sapphire crystal, combined 316L solid stainless steel and black
steel case, bracelet with double security deployment buckle, large embossed
text and Chase-Durer logo on case back, water resistant to 660ft/200m,
numbers and indexes applied with the Super Luminova illumination system,
extra large hands with split second, bi-directional bezel with tachymetre,
chronographs including a 12-hour elapsed timer with accuracy down to 1/10th
of a second, serial numbered, 2 year limited international warranty and
available in a black main dial with white rings, black main dial with red
rings or black with yellow rings, you can’t go wrong.
Tissot
Another such company is
Tissot. It was in 1853, in the Neuchâtel area of the Jura Mountains, in Le
Locle,
Switzerland, that Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son
Charles-Emile created the watch making company Tissot. Throughout history,
Tissot has pioneered timepieces that never fail to attract attention, both
in horology circles and among the general public.
Since 1985, Tissot has been a
member of the Swatch Group, the largest wrist watch producer and distributor
in the world and has recently signed a deal with NASCAR (the National
Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) to become the “official timekeeper”
and “official watch” of NASCAR. The unionization of these two
internationally-known companies debuted in February of 2006, introducing a
new line of NASCAR wristwatches.
Another triumph for Tissot,
in the racing and sports timekeeping arena, is their partnership as the
unique, official timekeeper of the 15th Asian Games, to take place from
December 1st to the 15th, 2006 in Doha,
Qatar. After the Olympics, the Asian games are the second
biggest sporting event in the world, consisting of 423 events and 45
participating countries.
Today, Tissot is represented
in over 140 countries, courtesy of carefully selected retailers, with
official racing and sports ambassadors such as: Nicky Hayden (Tissot’s first U.S. male sporting ambassador and current
star of the United States MotoGP circuit), Danica
Patrick (Tissot’s first U.S. female ambassador and
renowned Indy Racing League (IRL) driver) and
Michael Owen (current international English Football superstar).

Pirelli
As mentioned earlier, some
wristwatch companies (such as Pirelli and TAG Heuer) had their beginnings in
the motorsport industry. Pirelli is one such company that is synonymous
with racing. Pirelli's history is closely linked to the evolution of auto
racing. The company was founded by Giovan Battista Pirelli in 1872, in
Milan, Italy, near the city’s Central Station in an area known as the
Brusada. At the time, Pirelli’s revenue would be generated by
Italy’s first Italian rubber plant, by producing: rubber
belting, rubber tires, rubber tarps and cloths, raincoats and electrical
insulation.
During World War II, Milan
(then, the second largest city of the Italian
Republic) became an important industrial target for allied
bombers. In 1943, an allied air raid destroyed Pirelli's
Milan offices. The
re-building of the Brusada would be the crowning achievement of Pirelli's
post-war come-back and the re-establishment of its headquarters would be the
revival of the company.
Ever since their first
victory, in 1907 at the Peking-Paris Rally, Pirelli has donned the
scientific know-how to develop a wide range of competition, performance, and
motor sport tires. Today, the “Pirelli” name can be seen on the sidewalls
of tires in every branch of motor sport racing and high-performance
civilian tires. Thus the Pirelli slogan; “Power Is Nothing Without
Control.”
In 2002, Pirelli introduced
the world to its “P Zero: Industrial Design Project For Clothing”. The name
of each model has the suffix P Zero. P Zero was the code name of the
Pirelli tires of the same name, invented in 1987 for the Ferrari F40 saloon.
This was a pioneering development for Pirelli, utilizing the principle of
Formula One radials, for use on every-day civilian roads.
The 2002 introduction of the
P Zero line not only introduced clothing, but also accessories of the same
name. The P Zero Project pushed forward as Pirelli launched the P Zero
Tempo, the first watch collection to apply radial tire design and techniques
to watch making. The quick-off-the-mark, no-frills approach was evident
right from the packaging: a box that, like the watches themselves, fused
rubber and metal. P Zero watch dials are characterized by their original
curves. Black Pirelli radial tire straps are attached to the watchcase by
two tubular tires, much in the same way that auto tires are affixed to their
metal rims. The P Zero line is available in 5 different men’s styles
and 4 different woman’s styles:

TAG Heuer
In 1860, Edouard Heuer founded the Heuer Watch Company. He
opened his horology shop in St. Imier, a small village in the Swiss Jura region.
Heuer’s timepieces were soon recognized for their outstanding level of accuracy
and craftsmanship. It was soon discovered that there was a niche for these
highly accurate timepieces… sporting events!
Among the Heuer Watch Company’s
accomplishments were long traditions of technological innovations in
precision-made timepieces, including “water-resistant watches” and
“stopwatches”. In
1882, Edouard Heuer patented his first “chronograph”. One can’t help but ponder
over the many horologist contributions to this essential complication, with
modern technological improvements being implemented to it, to this very day.
Five years later, in 1887, he patented the “oscillating pinion”, which is still
used in modern mechanical chronographs.
Looking back on the Heuer
heritage, the Heuer brand has long been associated with the world of competitive
sports and auto racing. In
1911, the Heuer Watch Company introduced the first “automobile
dash board chronograph”, enabling the driver to keep a much more detailed record
of elapsed times and speed over a measured distance. Then in 1916, Heuer
invented the “micrograph”, a stopwatch accurate to within 1/100th of
a second. With the1920’s, Heuer was introduced to the coveted position of
“official timekeeper” for the Antwerp,
Paris
and Amsterdam Olympics. In 1933, Heuer launched the “Autavia”, the first
dashboard stopwatch for race cars, once again, aiding drivers in their quest for
the fastest elapsed time.
In the latter half of the 1900’s, specifically 1950, the public
was introduced to the arrival of the Heuer “Mareograph–Seafarer”, a wristwatch
with chronograph functions and a tide indicator, a simply incredible feat,
considering the scientific limitations of the time! Not until the 21st
century (October 30th, 2001 to be exact) will the newest and most
technologically advanced variation of this idea become a realization once again,
with the unveiling of the Suunto Observer TT Wrist-Top Computer.
In 1964, the Heuer Watch Company launched the “Carrera”
chronograph. This wrist watch was named for the 1950’s Carrera Pan-America
Mexico road race. The very next year, Heuer patented the “Microtimer”,
the first miniature, electronic timekeeping device, accurate to within 1/1000th
of a second!
1969 brought about the Heuer “Chronomatic”, the first automatic
chronograph containing a micro rotor. They also introduced the widely popular “Monaco”, worn by
Hollywood movie start Steve McQueen, in the 1971 movie “La
Mans”. From 1971 to 1979, Heuer is named the “official timekeeper” for
Formula
One racing. It wasn’t until 1975 that Heuer launches the “Chronosplit”, the
world’s first quartz wrist watch chronograph.
All throughout the 1900’s, Heuer
provided official timing services for the Olympic Games, FIS (Fédération
Internationale de Ski or the International Ski Federation) World Cup, the
Formula 1 World Championship and other major international sporting events.
In 1985, TAG
Heuer was formed when TAG (Techniques d'Avant Garde, manufacturers of high-tech
items, such as Formula 1 ceramic turbochargers) acquired Heuer. Heuer, which
was already a renowned watchmaker, was then specializing in racing chronographs.
Together they modernized the product line and became one of the biggest names
in the Swiss Watch Industry. Since then, the
company has craftily built one of the most recognized watch names in the
horology world. TAG Heuer has become one of the most popular and fashionable
status symbols available in the watch making market today.
In addition, TAG Heuer continues
winning an active following among motor sports enthusiasts around the world.
Throughout its history, TAG Heuer has steadily and increasingly built its
reputation by understanding motorsport-driven design and innovation, as well as,
a tradition, establishing itself as a leading producer of prestigious sports
watches and chronographs. Here’s just an inkling of the prestige that the TAG
Heuer name portrays to the stars and celebrities of today (e.g., TAG Heuer
ambassadors, past and present): Uma Thurman (a
talented and charismatic actress, Oscar nominee and winner of a Golden Globe
Award for her incredible performance in Pulp Fiction),
Tiger Woods (won 60
tournaments, 45 of these on the PGA Tour, including the 1997, 2001, 2002 & 2005 Masters Tournaments, 1999 & 2000
PGA Championships, 2000 & 2002 US Open Championships),
Jeff Gordon (Four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion,
three times Daytona 500 winner, four-time Brickyard 400 winner),
Maria Sharapova (Professional tennis player. No 2
WTA (World Tennis Association) ranking), Juan Pablo
Montoya (winner of the British and Italian Grand Prix,
currently lies fourth in the drivers’ championship),
Yao Ming (professional NBA (National Basketball
Association) Basketball player, center for the Houston Rockets and NBA
All-Rookie First Team honors), Steve McQueen
(he was a brilliant actor, and he was responsible for bringing
Hollywood to motor racing), Kimi Räikkönen
(one the brightest stars in the modern world of Formula One. In
2002, he won eight times and in 2003 was second in the World Championship),
Shah Rukh Khan (SRK, as he is known, is king of the
Indian film industry, fifteen cinema awards, a successful production company, a
perfume carrying his name and, above all, the adoration of a public who know
what they like), Sushmita Sen
(has remained a fixture at the top of the India box-office,
winning several awards and rave reviews), Sébastien
Bourdais (French champion in Formula 3 racing,
International Champion in Formula 3000, winner of the Monaco Grand Prix,
record-holder for Champcar victories and pole positions, winner of many races in
Endurance, the first European to win one of the four races that make up the
International Race of Champions in the U.S.)

contemporary model with an avant-garde design in the choice of its two dials: an
opalescent silvered version with black registers and blue hands, and a black one
with silvered registers and orange hands. Calibre 11 automatic movement and
Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal)
