Modern wrist watches are becoming more and more activity-related
as time goes by. There was a time when a mechanical watch, containing an
hour, minute and seconds hand, was appropriate. Today, that simply won't
do.
The modern
Recreational Sports Watch is, in fact, an entirely different timepiece
altogether (other than keeping accurate time). With today's digital
advancements, the modern recreational sports wrist watch can keep track of
one's: golf strokes, golf handicap, laps run (or raced), email, weather,
altitude, depth under water, time under water and much, much more.
One of the most sought after brands of these recreational sport
watches is Suunto. Today, Suunto is the largest manufacturer of compasses
and precision instruments utilized world-wide. Their instruments,
compasses and wrist top computers are calculating precise measurements in fields
such as forestry, mining, and surveying.
Suunto was created in 1936, when Tuomas Vohlonen invented the
liquid-filled compass to aid Finnish troops during World War II. By the
1960's, divers had established the fact that underwater direction was a
necessity. They knew that attaching an underwater compass to your wrist
aided direction. However, underwater activities operate in three
dimensions, not just two. Therefore, in the 1970's Suunto launched its
first dedicated diving instruments. These instruments could calculate
depth (the third dimension needed), as well as direction.
In the 1980's, with the aid of the new computer era, Suunto
developed the first dive computers. These new wrist top computers
calculated water pressure, temperature and eventually replaced the need for
diving tables. Due to Suunto's new diving watches, there was a directly
related, dramatic drop in diving accidents. Today, Suunto is the world
leader in this field.
With the 1990's brought the Suunto Vector. This wrist watch
was also able to give you information on altitude, weather, temperature, time
and direction. In the latter half of the 90's, Suunto focused more on the
wearer, than on the wearer's surroundings. Heart rate information was
now
a feature of Suunto's wrist top computers. Runners, soldiers, mountain
bikers, hikers, climbers and many other enthusiasts of recreational sports
benefited from this development.
Now, with the new millennium, Suunto wrist top computers can
satisfy the needs of people on golf courses, sail boats and yachts, as well.
In 2004, Suunto introduced the n3. This amazing device enables the wearer
to view appointments (a wrist top PDA, if you will), receive messages, email and
current news information and contains automatic time zone adjustment (the
ability to tell the current time, wherever you are!). In 2005, came the
Suunto t6. The t6 can tell you how fit you really are. It can help
you plan your training and how much benefit you really get from doing it.
It doesn't just tell you your heart rate or calorie consumption; it makes an
in-depth analysis of your body's performance by measuring 7 core body functions
and provides you with precise results of your training.
So you see, there is a wrist watch or "wrist top computer" for
every enthusiast's taste. Snowboarders not only need to know the current
weather forecast, they also need to now their altitude and compass
heading.
A sailor or yachtsman needs the current weather forecast, compass heading and
wind speed. Someone on the golf course would want to constantly know the
weather forecast, in addition to handicap, strokes and par. And of course,
a stock trader in the city would want to know the ups and downs of the Dow
Jones, email alerts, weather and phone numbers at-a-glance. No matter what
your recreation, there is a timepiece for you!
