To some of us, sports are events only viewed during special holidays.  Family gatherings, visiting local drinking and dinning establishments and friendly get-togethers usually lead to cheering and shouting for someone's favorite individual or team.  This type of fan goes with the flow and doesn't really care who wins, as long as it's a good game or race. 

For others, sports are a way of life.  Rooting for one's favorite Sports Team or NASCAR Driver involves scheduling their everyday activities around such events.  The avid sports fan follows their favorite team, player or driver with a passion.  Wins, losses, dates of up-coming events, trivia and other vital statistics can be plucked from the memory of the avid sports fan, at the blink of an eye.

This type of fan can easily be identified.  How, you may ask?  Take a look at the flag flying proudly in their front yard, the many articles of endorsed clothing owned, the decorations and memorabilia collected and displayed (usually in the same room as the big screen, surround-sound television) and (most notably) the automobile bumper stickers, flags and window decor identifying the owner's true colors.

These are the people in our lives that are easiest to shop for.  Once their favorite team, player or driver is established; it's time to shop!  Much to the satisfaction of the shopper AND the sports fan, there are sports stores opening everyday, nation-wide and on the World Wide Web.  The availability and vast array of sports-related gifts are astounding.

But, before we start shopping, a bit of "sporting education" is recommended.  Keep in mind; an educated consumer is a smart consumer.  Therefore, we should have some idea of what lies behind all those sports acronyms and seasons.  Not only will the educated consumer appear well-informed to the merchant, but also to the sports fan in our lives.
